Skip Hire Duration

If you’re about to start a house or garden clearance, a DIY job such as a kitchen or bathroom replacement or even a minor building project, and need to hire a skip to safely collect and dispose of all of the waste material produced it’s a good idea to work out how long the job is likely to take to ensure that you hire a skip for the right length of time.

When you’ve estimated the likely duration of your project it’s a good idea to add an extra day to this length of time when hiring a skip. This extra skip hire time will cover any unforeseen problems and help to ensure that you’re not rushing your project and trying to fill the skip in time for its collection deadline.

Whilst many skip hire companies will allow you to hire a skip for a single day, some insist on a minimum skip-hire period. On average, most customers rent a skip for between seven and ten days although this period can be extended.

How long can I hire a skip for if a skip permit is required?

If there is insufficient space or access to allow a skip to stand entirely within the boundaries of your property such that your skip will encroach upon public land such as a road, pavement or grass verge you must apply to your local authority for a skip hire permit covering the period for which you intend to hire a skip.

In cases where a skip permit is required, the maximum duration of a single skip permit is twenty-eight days, although should you need to hire a skip for longer than this it is possible to apply for a skip permit renewal.
